Nehru Stadium is situated in Kochi and is one of the largest cricket stadiums in India as the sporting venue contains capacity of 80,000 spectators. This stadium is currently and locally known as “Kaloor International Stadium” and on the counter side, this is a multipurpose international stadium as well.
Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) built this stadium in 1996 with the help of Kerala Government. Nehru Stadium of Kochi is known as the nosiest cricket stadium in the world due to its distinctive architecture.
This stadium was originally built as football stadium and it has hosted so many cricket and football matches. The stadium is also providing its services to different purposes like heavy gathering, concerns of singers and big political rallies.
The 1st tournament took place in 1997 and that was a football event titled as “Nehru Cup International Football Tournament”. The highest attendance was noticed when a football match was played between India and Iraq, and the attendance was near about 100 thousand.
On the counter side, the highest venue generated in an ODI match India vs Pakistan in April 2005. The very 1st One-Day international cricket match was played on 1st April 1997 between Australia and India.
Nehru Stadium hosted first match after the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar India played, one of the pavilions was re-name as Sachin Tendulkar pavilion as an honour to the legendary cricket before the match between West Indies and India on 21 November, 2013.
This is also a home ground of Kochi Tuskers who was a team of Indian Premier League, the 1t IPL match was played between Kochi Tuskers and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011. Hosting the final and semi-final match of Duleep Trophy is also one of the achievements of Nehru Stadium Kochi.
However this cricket stadium was also expected to serve the Chennai Super Kings as home venue, but this team denied to take the advantage and promised to consider the offer.
